Cosmetics Europe launches database of cosmetic ingredients for European citizens

  • Last updated: February 16, 2023

16 February 2023, BRUSSELS – Today, Cosmetics Europe launches COSMILE Europe, a European ingredient database which helps European citizens easily find information on cosmetic ingredients.

Currently available in 14 languages, it provides information on almost 30,000 ingredients used in cosmetics. It includes information on ingredient properties, their function, whether they are man-made and/or of natural origin and in which types of products they can be found.

“Cosmetics Europe is delighted to be sharing this tool with European citizens. There’s a deluge of information on cosmetics on the internet and it can be difficult to know which sources are reliable. The European cosmetics and personal care industry wants to provide European citizens with a simple way to access reliable, verified and scientifically supported information on cosmetics ingredients” John Chave, Director General of Cosmetics Europe.

The ingredient list on the label or packaging of cosmetics and personal care products uses INCI names (International Nomenclature Cosmetic Ingredient). These are systematic names internationally recognised to identify cosmetic ingredients. The cosmetic ingredient information in COSMILE Europe can be searched by common ingredient names or/INCI names, or by group of substances or product type.

This Cosmetics Europe initiative has been developed in partnership with the German Cosmetic, Toiletry, Perfumery and Detergent Association (IKW), in collaboration with the French Fédération des Entreprises de la Beauté (FEBEA) and with the technological development support of health&media GmbH.

Cosmetics Europe member associations representing the cosmetics and personal care industry at a national level made available COSMILE Europe in the following 14 languages: Bulgarian, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Lithuanian, Polish, Romanian, Serbian and Spanish. More languages will be available next year.
